We tried, but the vote went against us.

Not a stupid question. It was a vote to change our constitutions to define marriage as one man and one woman. This will make null and void any civil union that has been recognized up until now. I think it's a big mistake and one I feel my state will correct in the future, but it's sad for right now.
I'm sorry to hear that the vote didn't go the way you would have liked.
